Hello, I'm Andy Astfalck, an Australian freelance sports & action photographer, based in Hilversum the Netherlands.
I work on assignment for Runner's World Magazine, Bicycling Magazine, ASICS, Vifit Sports, Dutch Atletiekunie, and Agencies, Getty Images and Nurphoto.
I'm accredited with Dutch Sports Press Association (NSP) and the International Sports Press Association (AIPS)
You'll find me at all sorts of major sports events, including The World Championshionships, the Euros, World Cup events, Diamond League Athletics, European Tour Golf, World Rowing Championships, World Cup BMX, Delta Lloyd Sailing Regattas, ATP/WTA Tennis and the Rugby.
My images are consistently published in media publications; newspapers, such as the Guardian, Algemeen Dagblad, magazines, like Runner's World or Le Champion, sports social media sites, like CNN, ESPN, and Editorial Press Images websites like Getty Images, and Nurphoto, as well as worldwide blogs.
Since 1992, I’ve been a professional white water rafting guide, ski instructor, sea kayak guide, and swimming coach. I was a swimmer, and a paddler too, either in a kayak or an outrigger canoe, with my crew we managed to place 4th and 5th places at the 96 Outrigger Sprint World Championships. A passion for sports has transitioned into a career as a sports action photographer. I have the best job in the world, and my work allows me to travel work in the most beautiful places in the world including, Nepal, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, South East Asia and Europe. I'm perfectly at home out on the ocean, on a wild river, off piste or on a double black, in the rain and wind, as long as the athletes out there, I'll be there. I am drawn to their passion, the sacrifice and obsession for improvement.
Single-minded and focused, this is not meant as a negative, it's most definitely a positive trait, what ever I have turned my attention to as an athlete, coach or as a photographer, I have always been single-minded and focused, to master it and to be the best I can be.
I grew up on an 800-acre farm, I knew how to drive tractors and other farm machinery by the time I was 8, what does that have to do with anything you may ask? Kids who grow up on farms are used to working hard, work is work and has to be done, no matter when, I worked through school holidays, every weekend and even at night. It's not changed, I get the job done.
